The Boghall Drop in Centre who manages the Community Wing are funded by the BIG Lottery Fund Scotland. This funding has allowed the BDIC to hire an Activity Worker who is working with the community to identify gaps in provisions. One of the queries the Community Wing receives regularly is regarding exercise classes for children. The new Activity Worker (Natalie) though a pilot programme to gauge community interest would be a good start to see how popular this provision could be.
Natalie worked with a student(Stephanie) from West Lothian College to find a time slot that would work best for this age group and was available in the very busy schedule for the Community Wing. Tuesdays 4.30 - 5.15pm was chosen to be the most suitable. As a pilot session this group will run for a period of time and be evaluated to see if participation increases and if the children who attend enjoy the sessions. If all feedback and evaulation is positive the BDIC would aim to maintain this provision.
This new exercise class aims to encourage children of primary age to engage in a variety of exercise techniques. The sessions are designed to be fun and engaging. There is room for growth in the future and the class aims to be flexible in its approach.
The community will begin to see many pilot sessions introduced: all aimed at different age groups and interests. Nata lie has created a community survey to help the BDIC see what type of activities and services the residents of Boghall would like to see introduced to the community. These surveys are available in the Community Wing and an online version being adapted. The BDIC want to hear from you! Once the surveys have been completed Natalie will use this information to design pilot sessions which will be provided in the Community Wing.
The BDIC would be unable to deliver this type of community engagement work without the funding from the BIG Lottery Fund Scotland. This funding allowed the BDIC to employ someone whose focus is to work with the community and implement the services they feel should be provided in the community. Of course not all pilot programmes will be successful.
