Children Cooking Class

The current cooking class for children have finished in the Boghall Community Wing. The children all enjoyed the sessions and leave them equipped with knowledge on how to prepare a wide variety of healthy snacks, meals and even desserts.

The Cooking Class is provided by West Lothian Council's Health Improvement Team. The tutor Emma equips the children in the sessions an understanding of how to use equipment in the kitchen in a safe manner whilst exploring recipes that add in extra flavour through introducing new and exciting ways to cook meals in a different way. For example the children learned to cook Macaroni Cheese through introducing vegetables to add to the flavour.

Edward and Lewis added an extra challenge as they have an intolerance to lactose and can not eat or handle anything containing dairy. This was especially interesting for the other children in the group who learnt about alternatives and sampled a few foods they may not have experienced.

Through the 6 week period the children really pushed themselves to learn not only how to cook but how to examine food and think about salt, sugar and fat content of the food they eat regularly.

Through doing some quick evaluations we were able to see that the children enjoyed the cooking class and felt the recipes were easy to follow and that Emma made the class and lessons easy to follow. There was recipes they would like to alter and change as some of the ingredients they did not like the taste or texture. However they did enjoy the process of exploring the new ingredients. All the children who completed the course felt they had learnt a lot of new skills throughout the course.

The Community Wing will be providing more cooking classes with children in the new year.
