Wow what an amazing time everyone had during this Octobers Sunshine Club.
The theme of this Octobers programme was a mixture of Halloween crafts and all times of games and sports. Children were engaged in learning a variety of new games and dance moves.
The Boghall Drop in Centre used this opportunity to encourage the children to participate in some creative evaulation exercises. The children were given pens and asked to draw on a map of Boghall what they liked most about their community. Some of the children drew their homes and the homes of family and friends. This exercise highlighted how many of the children were unsure what their address was. This information could be used in our Easter programme to design a game or activity to help encourage children to find ways to learn their address.
Another exercise we tried with the children was to draw an outline of the Community Wing and ask the children what type of activities they would like to see introduced in their community. Then the staff worked with the children to work through some of the activities and groups that run in the Community Wing. Our final exercise with the children was to gauge their enjoyment of the Sunshine Club programme. It was important that we encouraged children to be honest in their feedback. This feedback and the other information we gathered over the week will be used to see what areas need changed for future sessions of the Sunshine Club.
One of the areas that really worked was the hot school dinners the children received thanks to West Lothian Council. The children enjoyed the variety and overall felt it was a better lunch than sandwiches previously offered.
Thanks to the Big Lottery Funding and the free school meals we were able to provide Sunshine Club for only £5 per child for the whole weeks activities. The Boghall Drop in Centre would not be able to provide low costing play scheme provisions if we did not have an amazing bank of volunteers who support the delivery of Sunshine Club.
One of the benefits of encouraging local residents to Volunteer is of course being able to provide more services to the community but a big bonus to the Boghall Drop in Centre is seeing the difference volunteering makes to the individuals. We have a few youth volunteers and volunteering really increases their confidence and the desire to make the community they live in a better place.
Best Friends Dean Taylor and Adam Ozer both volunteer with the Boghall Drop in Centre. Their reason for wanting to volunteer was simply because they did not have anything to do during the school holidays and another Volunteer encouraged Dean to register and he quickly encouraged Adam to do the same. Adam likes helping the 'little ones' with the activities and Dean likes working with the kids and seeing how happy they are when they manage to learn the dance steps or finish their art work.
If you are interested in Volunteering then speak to a member of staff at the Community Wing about registering.
